Please Stop That...

So, I had to address this here because it's something that makes me crazy! I really can't stand white people who act like they're black. It's not that I have a problem with black people ACTUALLY, it's because I have respect for black people. I have respect for their cultural independence. I look at these middle-class white kids trying to act like gangsters and I laugh knowing that those kids have no idea what living in a ghetto is like. If you go back in history, it's sad but true, white people have stolen a lot of extremely unique and innovative music genres that black people have worked hard at cultivating. We take a musical movement that they have pioneered with real emotion and then slap our name on it and take away artistic credit: jazz, blues, rock and' roll, and now rap! Holy cow people! Come one! Now we're stealing their slang and style? What happened to coming up with your own material? You want to be an individual? Then act like yourself and not someone else! Please, respect the African-American culture and stop making yourself look like an idiot!

Sometimes people just want to have fun and so they take on roles or personas for kicks. But when it becomes a substitute for who they really are then you have to wonder: When did they agree that they weren't good enough to be themselves? This seems to be just about everyone's problem to some extent. So I wouldn't worry about it too much - just be aware that it is also happening in you. There will always be a tension between conformity and freedom. God bless the person who can truly break free and just be who they really are. By the way, cultures have always borrowed from other cultures - we tend to imitate those we admire - for better or worse.

Thanks for your concern but it's not happening in me. I am myself. Again, thanks for the concern.

Britt,

You are one of the most genuine people I know, "What you see is what you get." That is so refreshing. It is ok to make changes to better ones self. There is a difference between affecting a type of persona and culture and improving yourself.

I get what you are saying and agree.
